Summer is just around the corner in Madison, WI and we all know what that means: shorts, tank tops, and bathing suits. With more skin exposed, you likely want to put your best foot – and shoulders and arms – forward. Even during cold weather months, those of us with pale skin may want a little extra glow. Spray tans are a great way to get that healthy look without enduring the harmful rays of the sun. Follow these tips to get the most out of your spray tan.
Shower and Exfoliate
Before you arrive for your appointment, make sure your skin is clean and dry. Shower with a loofah or body scrub to get rid of any dry or flaky skin. The smoother the surface, the better the spray tan will take. Thorough exfoliation is the best way to avoid a streaky, uneven application.
Choose Your Attire Wisely
For an all-over glow without any tan lines, many people choose to get a spray tan clothing-free. If you prefer to cover up a bit, give some thought to your outfit. It may sound like a good idea to wear the bikini you’re expecting to use while at the beach, but the pigment may permanently stain the garment. Wear something that wouldn’t break your heart if it were ruined.
Polish Your Nails
The tanning spray that looks great on your skin may not look as great on your nails. To protect them from discoloration, give yourself a manicure before your appointment. If you already have a salon quality manicure, don’t worry; the spray will wipe cleanly off your nails at the end of your session.
Use a Barrier Cream
Some of the drier nooks and crannies of our bodies, including knees, elbows, and ankles, more easily absorb pigment. After a spray tan, they can look darker than the rest of your skin. That’s why it’s important to apply a barrier cream to these areas before your session. You’re welcome to use your own, but we are happy to provide it for you. Just ask.
Keep Your Skin Moisturized
To keep your newly applied spray tan looking great longer, use lotion every day. If your skin gets too dry and needs exfoliation, your tan will fade.
Avoid Rubbing Your Skin
When stepping out of the shower, be sure to pat your skin dry instead of rubbing it. Rubbing can cause your tan to slough off prematurely. Also avoid using body scrubs, rough washcloths, or loofahs.
